The coastal strip from Mossel Bay to Storms River has some nice resort towns and good scenery – best seen away from the highway. The Garden Route is an excellent family or golfing destination for a calm & relaxing holiday in lovely surrounds. Chief amongst the natural attractions are the stunning mountain passes, the remaining indigenous hardwood forests, some fine gorges and the probable highlight which is the Tsitsikamma National Park around the Storms River Mouth.
The forested areas around Knysna still boast a number of 'Big Trees' - yellowwood, stinkwood and other fine old hardwoods. Well-marked, undemanding routes lead through rich vegetation and birdlife where the forest can be appreciated away from the throng. The indigenous forests in the region were previously much more extensive as they provided much sought-after building materials for developments in the Cape. Many of the Cape's fine houses used hard woods shipped from George.
