North West Province
Sun City was the first of the casino resorts that became popular as a white escape from the strictures of apartheid. As such, it remains the principal attraction of the province – close to Johannesburg and popular with golfers, gamblers and families.The absence of malaria has also added to the attraction of the Pilanesberg and more recent Madikwe Big 5 Reserves. Much of the rest of the province is arid, flat scrubland populated by towns that have brown up aroun the platinum mines.

Game Reserves
The region to the north of South Africa has a number of excellent Game Parks with easy reach of Johannesburg. Northwest Province itself offers Big 5 game viewing at Pilanesberg and Madikwe - both malaria-free - with good Wild Dog access at the latter. On the eastern side, there are a large number of private reserves in Limpopo's Waterberg. Travelling further in this direction gives easy road access to Botswana's Tuli block and to the lesser visited but rewarding Northern region of the Kruger Park.
